2018 BSV Bonsai Exhibition at Box Hill Town Hall

The Bonsai Society of Victoria hosted its 2018 Annual Exhibition at the Box Hill Town Hall on October 13 and 14.  It was a great Show and if you missed it, please mark your diaries for 2019.

A successful Exhibition relies on many volunteers and sponsors and the BSV extends a very special thank you to all those who helped make this Exhibition a magnificent event.  Your help is very much appreciated.

The Annual Exhibition is an opportunity for Members to display their work and we were not disappointed in 2018.  Over 90 wonderful bonsai were on display with an extensive range of species and styles.  Visitors to the Exhibition were very pleased with the display.  See below for views of the display.

In addition to the display, the Exhibition had a sales area for trees and bonsai equipment, a special display table for children’s bonsai,  demonstrations and a Children’s Workshop where the children were able to select and pot a small bonsai.

To recognise the excellent examples of our bonsai art, the Society makes two awards.  The People’s Choice Award is based on votes by visitors to the Exhibition for their favourite tree.  The Geoff Vanner Perpetual Trophy for the best tree in show was based on votes by BSV Members.

For 2018, the winner of the People’s Choice Award was Val for her well presented Sticky Wattle – Acacia howittii. Well done Val and we are sure you are still celebrating.

The Geoff Vanner Perpetual Trophy for 2018 was awarded to Matt for his Chinese Elm “Seiju” – Ulmus parvifolia “Seiju”.  This is a great example of this small leafed variety . Matt and his winning tree are shown below.

2017 BSV Exhibition at Box Hill Town Hall

Many thanks to all the Members and volunteers for their help in preparing and running another very successful Bonsai Exhibition on 14 and 15 October at the Box Hill Town Hall.  Over 90 trees were on display by Members and a well stocked sales area was the scene of much frenetic activity.

The Geoff Vanner Perpetual Trophy for Best Tree in Show was judged by Joe and awarded to Dave for his English Elm Forest also euphemistically known as “Sherwood Forest”.  Congratulation to Dave for creating a masterpiece.

The People’s Choice Competition was enthusiastically adopted by the public and close attention was given to final choices.  After counting many votes, our Competition Manager Robert announced that tree number 25, an English Elm grown by Howard and Marian was voted as favourite tree.  Well done.

2016 Bonsai Society Annual Exhibition – Prize winners

On the 8 and 9 October, the Bonsai Society of Victoria welcomed the public and bonsai enthusiasts to the Box Hill Town Hall to view an excellent range of bonsai grown and styled by its members.  Trees, pots and other bonsai accessories were also on sale.

Many thanks to all the members and service providers for their assistance in setting up, running and dismantling the Exhibition and to all the visitors for their interest and support.

Best Tree in the Show was judged to be tree number 72.  A Mirror Bush displayed by Quentin.  The tree was collected as a stump in 1991 and has been in training and refinement since then.  This tree is also commonly referred to as a Yamadori in Japan which is a term used to refer to trees collected in the mountains or more likely to be in the wild in Australia.  Congratulations to Quentin for an excellent example of bonsai art.  See the photo below.

2015 BSV Exhibition and Prizes

Over the weekend of the 10 and 11 October, the Bonsai Society of Victoria conducted its Annual Exhibition at the Box Hill Town Hall and invited the public to view an excellent range of bonsai grown and styled by its members.  Trees, pots and other bonsai accessories were also on sale.

Many thanks to all the members and service providers for their assistance in setting up, running and dismantling the Exhibition and to all the visitors for their interest and support.

Best Tree in the Show was judged to be tree number 37 exhibited by John.  This  tree has been trained for over 35 years in a classic broom style.  Congratulations to John for an excellent display.

Best Tree in the Show – English Elm

Visitors attending the Exhibition also get to vote for their favourite tree.  The competition is intense and in 2015, the People’s Choice was awarded to Pat for her group of Coastal Tea Trees.  For those of you familiar with Tea Trees in nature, tree number 49 is a very realistic representation of a tea tree group.

The photo on the flyer illustrates a traditional three point Japanese display.  Several of these arrangements will be included in the Exhibition.

2014 BSV Bonsai Exhibition & Prizes

Once again, Bonsai Society Members have risen to the challenge and contributed to an excellent display of bonsai in this year’s Exhibition.  There were 74 great examples of bonsai art on display.  Also, many thanks to the many helpers to set up and dismantle the exhibition space, answering visitors questions and staffing the sales tables and the many other activities that are necessary to keep the Exhibition running smoothly.  Your contributions are very much appreciated.

The winner of the bonsai judged to be the Best in Show tree was Quentin with his Black Pine.  See photos below of the tree and its artist.  It was tree number 70 in the Catalogue.

Visitors to the Exhibition were also invited to vote for their favourite tree and after lots of vote counting, Gerard’s Juniper was awarded with the People’s Choice Award.  It was tree number 11 in the catalogue.  Photos of the tree and its artist are included below.
